Mother of Pearl or Nacre is the inner lining of many mollusks, including abalone, oysters, and pinna nobilis. The iridescent mother of pearl that comes from shell linings also covers the outsides of pearls.

Mother of Pearl is a biomaterial that's mainly composed of calcium carbonate. This shell lining is known for its colorful "pearlescent" qualities and can range from whites, creams, and ivories to rainbow color. Mother of pearl can have a low luster or be highly iridescent.

About Abalone

Abalone is gastropod mollusk with an ear-like shape and a shell made of layers of mother of pearl. The vibrant colors seen in abalone shells, compared to other mussels, are primarily due to the unique structure of their nacre layers, which have a very high density of microscopic grooves on their surface, causing light to diffract and create a wider range of iridescent colors depending on the viewing angle, unlike the more uniform nacre layers in other mussels; this phenomenon is often described as "Bragg diffraction."

Mother of Pearl is more common than Abalone. Abalone is specie of mollusc; there are about 93,000 recognized species. Abalone is found in the Pacific Rim, including the west coast of North America, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, and Japan.

Regardless of the species, Mother of Pearl, Abalone and pearls share the same properties.
