What Are Aromatherapy Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the volatile liquids distilled from plants utilized for their aromatic and healing properties. Essential oils can be used to promote balance, healing and to assist one to achieve holistic health.
Essential oils are the most concentrated and potent of all plant extracts. They are approximately 75 to 100 times more concentrated than dried herbs. One drop of peppermint essential oil is equivalent to 28 cups of herbal tea.
What is Aromatherapy?
As defined by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, Aromatherapy, also referred to as Essential Oil Therapy, is the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. This holistic therapy seeks to unify physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s innate healing process.
The History of Aromatherapy
The essence of plants were one of mankind’s first medicines. From Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts, we know that priests and physicians have been using oils derived from aromatic plants for thousands of years.
Today, scientists, physicians, researchers, and many individuals concerned with managing their own personal health are beginning to explore and discover the amazing benefits of pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils.
Pure Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils
As we begin to understand the power of essential oils in the realm of personal holistic healthcare, we comprehend the absolute necessity of obtaining pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. Low pressure and low temperature are key to maintaining the purity, the ultimate fragrance, and the therapeutic value of the oil.
The information on this website is based on the use of pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. Those who are beginning their journey into the realm of aromatherapy and essential oils must actively seek the purest quality and highest therapeutic-grade oils available. Anything less than therapeutic-grade oils may not produce the desired results and can, in some cases, be extremely toxic.
Essential oils can be used aromatically, topically and internally (provided they are certified pure, therapeutic-grade oils). A word of caution – not all essential oils are safe to take internally. When using internally, be sure to only use pure, therapeutic-grade oils. Oils of a lesser quality can compromise your health.
Aromatherapy Essential Oil Properties
Essential oils embody the regenerating, oxygenating, and immune-strengthening properties of plants. Essential oils are so small in molecular size that they can quickly penetrate the skin and enter the blood stream. In fact, essential oils can affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes and then be metabolized like other nutrients.
Essential oils are very powerful antioxidants, creating an unfriendly environment for free radicals. Essential oils prevent all mutations, work as free radical scavengers, prevent fungus, and prevent oxidation in the cells.
Essential oils are antibacterial, anticancer, antifungal, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, antitumor, antiparasitic, antiviral, and antiseptic. Essential oils have been shown to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses while simultaneously restoring balance to the body.
Plants possess various constituents which give each essential oil different properties; some can be very energizing and uplifting while others promote feelings of peace and relaxation. Essential oils containing sesquiterpenes have the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier, something traditional water-based medicines cannot do.
Essential oils containing sesquiterpenes have the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier, enabling them to be effective in the treatment or Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis (MS) and other brain disorders.
Essential oils can be utilized for much more than aromatherapy and health benefits, they can be used to clean and purify your home, auto, workplace, etc. Learn more about essential oil properties and which oil to use with our Essential Oil Quick Reference Guide.

Essential Oil Reference Guide
Over the years I've had many customers ask me where they can learn more about essential oils and access accurate information. One of my favorite essential oil reference guides is Modern Essentials 5th Edition. Though a bit older than the latest Modern Essentials Handbook which is the 2019 11th Edition, the 5th Edition is still a favorite go-to when I need to look up essential oil information. I am grateful that I chose the hardcover version, for this book has served me well and continues to do so!
